K-Citymarket replaced its old intranet with a new solution built from scratch to better support daily operational work for non‑food personnel.
The intranet was redesigned to improve clarity, navigation, mobile use, and store‑specific communication.
The project was completed on schedule and under budget, with continued collaboration through ongoing maintenance.
K-Citymarket’s previous classic SharePoint intranet no longer supported business needs, and its maintenance had become burdensome. The organization required a clear, easy‑to‑use system that could function both as an intranet and as an operational tool for non‑food personnel. Ensuring that shared and store‑specific information was easily accessible was essential. Increased mobile use was also a key requirement.
"It’s worth noting that the entire project was successfully carried out remotely via Teams—and partly even during the summer holiday season"
“The rules were created behind the scenes to make content creators’ work easier, so that no single person has to manually keep watch over the content”
“The best solution was to build a completely new, modern intranet from the ground up so that the user experience could be elevated to an entirely new level. We wanted to start from a clean slate, because we felt there was no point in migrating the old data — the cleanup work would have needed to happen at some point anyway”
Context& and K-Citymarket jointly defined requirements and designed a new intranet with a visual identity aligned to the brand. Page templates, landing page structures, intuitive navigation, and mobile-friendly usage were developed directly in K-Citymarket’s environment.
Six design workshops addressed content needs, information architecture, permissions, and the role of the intranet alongside other tools. No content was migrated; instead, 300 content creators rebuilt all material from scratch.
Custom‑built features supported content management, including rules for expiring articles, automated reminders for content owners, personalized read/unread indicators, and symbols for categorizing announcements. Search and filtering were enhanced to help users find information quickly.
Training was provided to administrators, content creators, and employees through both Context& and Kesko’s internal sessions.
K-Citymarket is part of K‑Group/Kesko and employs thousands of people across Finland, serving customers through its network of large retail stores.
The new intranet was launched in August 2023, meeting the schedule and staying under the original budget. Collaboration continued through ongoing maintenance, with support provided to content creators and administrators. A feedback form allowed employees to share their impressions, and mobile use received positive responses.
